Yucatan Peninsula

Yucatan Peninsula is on the north east side of Mexico. It is a great place to travel, with beautiful Caribbean beaches and islands, interesting Mayan archaeological zones, Eco-parks and much more.
My trip to Yucatan was one of my best experiences, and if you travel in Mexico or even elswhere in central America, I truly recommend visiting this area, even if it is only for a few days.

Cancun

Cancun is a tourist resort at the east part of the Yucatan Peninsula.
It consists of the city center on the mainland, and a narrow (partially artificial) island - the hotel zone (Zona hotelera) - where the more modern and luxurious hotels are.
Cancun is very popular among American tourists, and this is why here, unlike other parts of Mexico, you will find many people who speak English, and the tourists' areas are modern and western.
I strongly advise not to visit Cancun during US spring break, when much like Acapulco, the city is very crowded and prices rise.

Transportation to Cancun

Flights to Cancun - Cancun has an international airport, with many daily flights from Mexico, South America, few US cities and Europe.
While in the city, take a taxi or a bus (very cheap and easy to use).
At the hotel zone, use the R1 or R2 bus lines that go along the hotel zone to downtown Cancun and to the bus terminal. One-way ride is less than 1 USD (it's cheap because the locals use it as well) and the lines are very frequent (every few minutes) with many stops along the hotel zone.

Cancun Hotels Review

Cancun is one of the most visited cities in Mexico. As such, there are many hotels in Cancun to choose from. The cheapest hotels can be found at the city itself (30-40 USD). You can find a Cancun hotel at the edges of the hotel zone for reasonable prices (70 USD), while Cancun hotels at the center of the hotel zone are more expensive, and cost way over 100 USD a night.
I stayed at two different hotels, and recommend Aquamarina Beach Resort Hotel on the hotel zone, which is not too expensive and in a good location.

Things to do in Cancun

Relax and enjoy the white-sand beaches.
Water sport - you can find here every imaginable water activity.
Night life - at the center of the hotel zone, there are many bars and clubs where you can party all night, like Hard Rock Cafe and Senor Frogs. If you want to dance, go to one of the discos that also include a show and free alcohol (expect to pay about 30 USD), for example, DadyO's and CocoBongo. I went to both of them and enjoyed a lot.
If you like salsa music, don't miss the famous Azucar club that features amazing live music every night (8 USD, Camino Real hotel at the hotel zone), and a mixture of Mexicans and tourists.
In downtown Cancun, you will find a more cultural entertainment and typical Mexican bars/restaurants. If you want to mingle with the locals, this is the place for you.
Shopping - too expensive! Even the flea markets downtown are overpriced (much like Acapulco).
Day trips - Take day trips or guided tours to the Mayan ruins of Tulum or Chichen Itza.
