New Territories

Experience old Chinese village life and enjoy the great outdoors of the New Territories!

The New Territories area is the mainland north of Kowloon. Usually travelers just pass through the New Territories on the way to China.
My advise is to spend a few days in this beautiful scenic area that offers great hiking, cycling and camping possibilites, bird-watching, swimming and more.

Travel in the New Territories

MacLehose Trail

The famous MacLehose Trail is about 100km long and goes from Pak Tam Chung in the east to Tuen Mun in the west. It is divided into ten sections and take about 40 hours to complete.

Lion Rock Country Park

Lion Rock Country Park is a big scenic park, mostly covered by forest. Main attractions here are camping and hiking.

Kam Tim walled villages

These villages are relatively more touristy than the other places, but still they offer an interesting glimpse into the into 16th century life in China.

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

More than 400 steps lead up to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery. Inside the temple there are about 13,000 Buddha statues!

Che Kung Temple

This is an interesting old Taoist temple.

Sai Kung Peninsula

On the east side of the New Territories, Sai Kung Peninsula is a great area for hiking and camping.

Mai Po Marsh

This place is known for its interest for bird-watchers.

Plover Cove Reservoir

Offers cycling opportunities.

Hotels in the New Territories

There are some hotels in the New Territories, especially at the south part that close to Kowloon, but I don't recommend them. Stay at Kowloon itself, or at Lantau.
At the north part of the New Territories you can find decent places to sleep at the villages.
