Oaxaca

Oaxaca is in the middle of Mexico, about 6 hour drive south east of Mexico City, and near the important Monte Alban archaeological site.

In Oaxaca

Zocalo (the central town square) - Nice square, including some market stands (with very good prices).
On the weekend I was there, a local orchestra played, adding to the relaxed atmosphere.
Santo Domingo church - one of the biggest and important churches in Mexico.

Accommodations - Oaxaca hotel review

I stayed at Marques del Valle Hotel which is in the historical downtown between the zocalo and Alameda Park. This great location right in the center of Oaxaca is a big advantage, and I recommend it.

Outside Oaxaca

Monte Alban

Approximately 6 miles west of Oaxaca, Monte Alban is a very large archaeological site with many monuments and ruins. The pyramids of Monte Alban are not as big as those of other ancient cities in Mexico, and the impressive impression of the place is derived from the vast area that includes large platforms on which stood temples and other ceremonial structures.
The site is situated on a low mountain rising above the surrounding area, so you will also enjoy the great view of the entire Oaxaca valley.

El Arbol del Tule ("the Tule Tree")

Located near the town church of Santa Maria del Tule, 9 km east of Oaxaca, it is the tree with the biggest trunk in the world - 11.5m in diameter (yes, even bigger than the Giant Sequoias in California), and its age is estimated at about 1500 years.
